All About Office Chair Casters - Selecting, Replacing and Sorting

Office chair casters are great when they are working well, when they are not they can be a real pain. In this article we take a look at the two commonest chair caster problems.

Let's begin by looking at replacing damaged casters first.

Generally caster replacement is pretty straightforward as the wheels are most likely mounted on steel posts which push fit into the base. If the wheel is broken it's likely the steel support post will still be in the base and this can usually be pulled out with pliers or even levered out with a stout screwdriver blade.

As long as the socket is undamaged fitting a new caster is simply a question of pushing the replacement in firmly.

To find the right casters you should speak with the chair's supplier as they will almost certainly have suitable replacements. It's likely you will have to buy a set of 5 wheels, fortunately they aren't usually expensive and you will probably find the chair moves a lot better when you replace them all.

Other sources include places like Office Depot as well as online specialists offering a wide selection of different types.

Where the actual base is damaged you'll need to try and get a new one which may prove a bit awkward. If the chair is a number of years old it may be time to consider replacing it with a new one.

Next, let's move onto selecting the right casters for your office chair.

It's important to fit the right casters for the floor surface you are using because with the wrong ones the chair will either be very difficult to move or alternatively will skid all over the place.

The vast majority of office chairs come with casters intended for use on carpeted floors, so if your office has carpets you should be fine. Occasionally, when wheels are older they can become stiff to move so you could either replace them or alternatively buy a chair mat as it allows them to move much more freely.

Where you work on a hardwood, tiled or smooth floor surface you will need to use casters made for these types of surfaces here the wheels are usually rubber or polypropylene faced so they grip the surface better. These casters also work well with chair mats too.

Most manufacturers of better quality seats will be able to supply suitable casters, or offer the choice of fitting them when buying a new chair.

If your chair is quite old it may be difficult to find the right casters and consequently it may be time to consider buying a new chair.
