A moving, or furniture dolly is a well constructed platform with 4 independent caster wheels mounted under it's frame. It moves in any direction, usually forwards or backwards. The average size is 30 X 18 inches, and 5 to 7 inches in height. They can hold 900 lbs. or more, depending on the type of caster it has. A dolly is not to be confused with a "child's dolly", "Dolly Parton", or "Hello Dolly". It is also, not the same thing as a skate board, although it's physical nature is the same; 4 wheels on a platform to carry something. A dolly is a tool designed to carry heavy objects.
Rubber Casters
Moving dollies, in many forms, have been around since the invention of the wheel. That wheel became more wheels and eventually a platform on top; hence, a dolly. People have always been improving on everything, as they are now. Perhaps the first dollies were a wheeled cart to carry boulders to manufacture the mortar and pestle in ancient times. The Egyptians transported heavy stone blocks, made to build the pyramids, with rolling logs under a skid. This is a type of dolly in concept, and it did the job well. The point is, that a wheeled dolly, or log rolling skid made moving heavy objects easier than "dragging" them. A freight trains flatbed car, with it's wheels underneath is like a two-way dolly. It is loaded and carries a lot of weight. "Your" dolly is "your" freight car and "YOU ARE THE ENGINE'. You push or pull your cargo the same way. You move things with ease.
In today's market there are various types of dollies available. Furniture dollies made of wood are the most common. A REGULAR dolly offers strength and reliability at an economy price. Rails are 4 inches wide. A SOLID dolly has a smooth treated deck with counter sunk bolts. Deck boards run lengthwise. A FLUSH dolly has 4 inch wide by 1 3/4 inch thick double length rails and a smooth open deck. A CARPET END dolly has padded carpeting to protect furniture and appliances. The RUBBER CAP dollies have non skid 3 inch rubber caps to keep slippery loads in place without damage. Then there is the ALL CARPET SOLID dolly, offering strength and reliability at an economy price. It's fully carpeted deck prevents damage to cargo. Dollies made of plastic or metal are also available.
The moving or furniture dolly might be most commonly known for, or associated with transporting pianos. You can even play the piano, while someone else pushes it on a dolly, if you can walk sideways. You can even "whistle while you walk" or stand on another dolly while you play. Standing on another dolly is not recommended, though. A skateboard is for that, I suppose. Besides pianos, dollies can carry refrigerators, washers and dryers, couches, buffets, china cabinets, mattresses, box springs, file cabinets, crates, boxes, and many other large items. You can even carry 10 stacked dollies on a dolly if you want to!! It is recommended that you construct ramps over door thresholds, small flights of stairs, and up to the truck. You can "clear" a door threshold if you use the following procedure; using leverage. Let's say, for example, you want to move a chest of drawers over that threshold. As the dolly under your chest of drawers approaches the threshold, you push down on the back top side of the chest, therefore lifting the front wheels of the dolly, and push forward. The front wheels "clear". Set the cargo down. Now push down the front top side of the chest, lifting the rear wheels of the dolly, and pull forward. The rear wheels "clear" the threshold and you can now continue rolling the chest of drawers to the desired location. This small endeavor takes minimal experience and you become skilled quickly, because your dolly doe's the work.
There will always be the need to move things, your things, or a friends things, so having a dolly or two on hand is a good idea. It is one of the handiest tools you can have around the home or office.
