1. Look for a store that offers replacement parts of your brand of luggage. Instead of buying from different stores, you might as well buy from one store only so you can cut back on shipping and handling expenses.
2. There is no guarantee that Airline luggage handlers will handle your bag carefully. In order to protect your bag from wear and tear, try buying a luggage cover. This will help avoid scratches, broken seams and broken pockets. It will also protect your travel luggage from external elements such as rain and mud.
3. Replace plastic caster wheels with rubber inline skating wheels. This is more durable. It will also hold the weight of your bag better. Plastic caster wheels usually sag under the weight of a heavy bag. Furthermore, a bag with plastic caster wheels is usually difficult to move around on carpeted floors.
4. Do not force your bag to close. Remove some of your stuff so the bag can close seamlessly. If you force the bag to close even if it is bursting with its contents, the zippers can get damaged. While plastic zippers ca be easily replaced, the metal ones are more difficult. Replacements for metal zippers are also more expensive.
5. Avoid lugging sharp objects that might damage the interior fabric of the bag. Make sure your hair brush is stuffed inside a small pouch. Also use small pouches for hair pins, clothing pins, pencils or pens.
6. Do not shove your bag roughly in the overhead compartment of the plane. Just try to fit it in the compartment gently.
7. Immediately fix torn seams or holes. Do not pull or tug loose threads as this can cause more damage to the luggage. Make sure you sew the torn areas neatly.
8. Clean your bag after using it. Use an appropriate cleaner to remove dirt and grime from the luggage handle and the caster wheels. Do not just use a damp cloth as this can make the metal parts of the handle rusty.
